My Electronic Book Reader

All about the joys of owning an electronic book reader.

What is the best way to enjoy ebooks?

I am tired of lugging a suitcase full of books on my vacations and would like to do some ebook reading. The only problem is there are so many ebook readers and so many options i can’t decide. Nook, Kindle 2, Sony…etc, there are so many possibilities. I even heard that they have an application for the iTouch which stores ebooks for you and they are free too. I do not know what to buy, what device is better, and where to find the cheapest ebooks. Will someone please help me?

Don’t get devices like iTouch, they have backlight screen like computer screen, and it not suitable for reading.

Don’t get Sony Reader too, it is difficult to find books on it, and books on it are more expensive too.

I’ve given a detailed comparison between the Nook and the Kindle previously, in another answer here. Guess it’ll help you decide which one to choose:

And recently, Amazon has announced an upgrade to its Kindle, to secure their market shares. See here for the update details:

  2. Rony Said,

Nook come with the only WiFi and doesnt support 3G wireless network. The price of books of nook are more expensive than kindle. Books of kindle are far more cheaper compare to the actual books and nook. Also one of the other feature of Kindle is it’s E-INK screen technology that don’t glare in any light so no strain to eyes and you can read for hours. It also has a Text-To-Speech with auto-page turning which is also a very useful feature. Also has a Built-in dictionary and web access to Wikipedia and other resource sites. Kindle 2, supports free 3G wireless which is very heplful for me since I travel a lot. Also the 3G wireless is covering almost over 100 countries which is really good. Also the battery life is good.

  3. Maxim Said,

I own the Kindle. If you ask me to choose again now, I’ll still go for the Kindle instead of the Nook or Sony Reader, because it has the text-to-speech function which means I can "read" books with my hands and eyes free to do other things. I use this function often when I’m on public transport, doing housework, etc. It is really a cool feature that cannot be missed.

The web browsing function over wireless network on the Kindle (while the Nook only has web browsing over WiFi, i.e. only when you are around WiFi hotspot; the Sony Reader doesn’t even have a web browser) is rather important as well. The free internet (and now it is free international internet) plus the web browser allow me to look for information whenever I’m in need. And right now it is free for both the U.S. and many other countries, it is just incredible when you bring it to trip.

And indeed, the Kindle has more available books, and ebooks are cheaper on the Kindle as well (Barnes and Nobles always count in the one million free books from Google, which can also be read on the Kindle. For Sony, many users complain it is difficult to find books for it).

And I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Finally, there may be good offers for the ebook readers from Amazon’s site. I put the links below for you to check from time to time.

    Hope it helps :)

  4. Samuel Sampson Said,

The Kindle sounds like it’s best for you. You want a great device at a reasonable price easy to read the biggest selection of ebooks at the best price. They have apps for most other devices making them compatible with the iphone or ipad on you kindle acount. The only other option is the Nook from B&N but ebooks are more expensive. All other devices don’t meet your criteria unless you want to go with the ipad so you can do all your online stuff as well on it that will justify it’s high price tag. Enjoy your reading

  6. Smarto Said,

Among the ebook readers, the Amazon Kindle is the best I’ll say. I recommend this article, it mentioned Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Barnes and Nobles, and other ebook readers by the end of the review:

  7. Arthur H Said,

It is always the best to read some actual user opinions.

There are some very good actual user opinions here, for someone who has tried the Nook and the Kindle, you should get a much better idea after reading. It is true that the Nook still has some defects after updates:

  8. Mike P Said,

    Go for the Kindle.

I love my Kindle 2 very much. If you’re thinking about getting the Kindle, I’ll say get it and you won’t regret. Right now I’ve read over 10 books with the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all the books with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, it is really clear like reading books; and even I read with the device for long hours, I don’t feel tired. The internet browsing comes handy as well when I want to look for information on some specific area. My only complaint is the white case, right now all the Kindles are in white color… I think it will be cool if I can have a black or deep blue color Kindle ;)

Yes, Kindle books are cheaper than hard copies. I suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer who is also a book lover, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR9J54TZ1541OR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=more_info-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

And there are some websites, where you can find more than ten thousand free books for the Kindle, so that’s why you no longer need to get to library, you can actually own these books:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/b/?node=2245146011&tag=more_info-20

If you need to read PDF with charts and graphics, you may want to go for the Kindle DX. Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:

  9. Wealth Paragon Said,

If you are ebook avid reader, you should consider the variety of ebook choices for your selected reader.

Kindle 2 can store 1500 ebooks while Kindle DX can store 3500 ebooks. Both models are supported by the largest 170,000 ebook choices at Amazon.
