   That’s a good question. The IELTS has the backing of some very big organisations – the British Council, Cambridge and the IDP, so it’s been promoted by these organisations, and many professional organisations that accredit trainees recognise the IELTS. It’s pretty much become a global English entrance exam for university, professional accreditation and migration purposes (for the ES countries).

   IELTS is probably more popular because it is rigorously standardised. I know because I’m an examiner. And, it’s really up to universities and governments to decide on the English tests they prefer, and the IELTS syndicate have pretty much cornered the market. I’d have to say it’s a pretty fair test…
