Yes some textbooks are available in the Kindle store, but then you still have to eat the cost of the Kindle itself. Also I always worry about something like that getting broken. Textbooks are one thing for sure - durable. If the price is what's so enticing for you, you should try ordering your textbooks online. I always use http://www.bigwords.com They are a textbook search engine that searches all the online retailers to find you the best prices. It's pretty cool actually.
References :
Experience in college.

Yes, I can get several textbooks on my Kindle and they are cheaper than actual textbooks, so it does save me some money and heavy weights. However, beaware that not all textbooks are available for the Kindle right now, you may want to do a search in the Kindle store to see if your college textbooks are available:

Other than textbooks, the best thing I enjoyed on my Kindle is the convenience it brought to me, and all the functions available on such a handy device. I remember I read this review when I decided to get my Kindle:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Finally, in case you don't know, Amazon has recently put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling $100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support... So take the chance if you want it.

Hope it helps :)
References :
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015T963C?ie=UTF8&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0015T963C (Kindle 2 after price slash)
